Just a handful of the 30 (and growing) team supporting Gold Coast Hospital Foundation – Back row, left to right: Ellie, Kelly, Karen, Sam, Michael, Wes. Front row, left to right: Bonnie, Rob and Deshalinee.
Karen, a dedicated Patient Support Officer at Gold Coast University Hospital, has found a wonderful way to blend her passion for patient care with her love of running. Working in the Rehabilitation Ward, Karen has been deeply moved by the challenges faced by a local patient and their family. Inspired to make a difference, she took action and rallied a team of 30 (and growing) Gold Coast Health staff and local celebrities, including radio personalities Spida Everitt and Ben Hannant, and Member for Southport Rob Molhoek, to participate in the upcoming Gold Coast Marathon in July.
“It’s really exciting,” said Karen, thrilled by the support they have received from well-known locals.
Initially, Karen aimed to raise funds directly for the patient. However, the family suggested that the team raise money for Gold Coast Hospital Foundation instead, with the wish to ensure more members of our community have access to critical life-saving equipment. Having worked at the hospital for 10 years, Karen has witnessed firsthand the positive impact the Foundation has on patients and their families, and readily agreed to honour the family’s request.
“I see it in here daily, your life can change in a second,” Karen said, acknowledging that most of the patients she sees never expect to end up in hospital.
As they prepare for the marathon, Karen and her team are focused on the bigger picture: running for the hearts of their community and being part of enhancing health services for the greater Gold Coast region by raising as much as they can. Karen and the team invite anyone interested to join their team, emphasising that it’s not just for hospital staff but for everyone who wants to make a positive impact for our community.
“Everyone is welcome, not just Health Staff, we would love to have you on the team,” said Karen.
When asked what they’ll be thinking during the marathon, Karen and her teammate and colleague, Wes, express pride in being part of such a supportive community and can’t wait to witness the buzz at the start line, running alongside their teammates. When they cross the finish line, Wez and Karen will be ready to celebrate with a well-deserved beer.
